Abstract:

"Bangkok is an informal portrait of this most vibrant and perplexing of modern cities. The city has grown and changed over 200 years, from a fortified island to a sprawling megapolis that today is home to more than 10 million people. The districts and streets of modern Bangkok are explored in a series of personal impressions, describing temples, cuisine, customs and modern life. The author reveals how the charms of Bangkok and its people outweigh the disadvantages of pollution, traffic and stifling heat. He also introduces various celebrities of past and present, such as the early kings of Thailand's present dynasty, Anna Leonowens, the famed heroine of The King and I, and Jim Thompson, the American silk entrepreneur and art collector who vanished mysteriously in the Malay jungle some 35 years ago." "Bangkok provides a much-needed history of the city, but it is also imbued with the warmth of Warren's love affair with its frenetic way of life."--BOOK JACKET.
