Fragment:

Comprises a complete set of the publications (primarily poetry) and other printed matter (chapbooks, pamphlets, broadsides, Christmas cards, stationery, press announcements) of the Banyan Press and Claude Fredericks. Also includes related correspondence, mss., account books, reviews, publication lists, articles about the press, etc.

Correspondence (1947-1950) is between Fredericks and writers, booksellers, librarians, bookbinders, stationers, and book reviewers. Copies of publications and other printed matter designed but not printed by Fredericks are also present.

Series I, Complete output of the Press: The 151 imprints of the Banyan Press and Fredericks, 74 imprints from 1946-1950 and 14 more from 1975-1978. Under his own name, Fredericks produced 59 imprints from 1959-1973 and 4 more from 1980-1986. Poets and other authors printed by the press include John Berryman, Robert Duncan, Richard Eberhart, William Everson, André Gide, Barbara Howes, Bernard Malamud, James Merrill, Charles Simic, Stephen Spender, and Gertrude Stein (including 2 previously unpublished novellas and 3 previously unpublished poems). Reprints and translations of works by authors such as William Blake, Tristan Corbière, and John Donne were done under both imprints. The Press occasionally printed books on commission from other publishers, including the Gotham Book Mart and Jargon Books. Most exemplars are signed and numbered or lettered where appropriate, and where more than one paper stock or cover was used, multiple copies are present. Private printing, especially Christmas printing, stationery, announcements, invitations, and programs (e.g. for the Betty Parsons Gallery and the Living Theatre), were common jobs under both imprints.

Series II, Samples of other publications designed but not printed by Fredericks: Includes issues of the Bennington College journal Silo and magazines, programs, and brochures.

Series III, Business records: Partial records of the Press (1946-1978), including an account book, ca. 15 contracts, and cancelled checks.

Series IV, Material about the Press: Includes an article and a bibliography; printed and photographic materials for exhibits on fine printing or small presses in general or on Banyan/Fredericks in specific, at Bennington College (1961, 1970, 1980), the Grolier Club (1979), the New York Public Library (1980), and New York University (1985); and reviews of Press books.

Series V, Printer's manuscripts: 27 printer's typescripts survive. In a letter dated 16 Oct 1947, Fredericks mentions that he destroyed galley proofs, and only ca. 10 pp. of galleys are in the archive. Except for the final printed products (and perhaps the authors' own mss.), these are the only record of the Banyan printing process.

Series VI, Banyan Press correspondence: Incoming and outgoing letters related to the Banyan Press (1947-1950), including correspondence with poets and authors published by the Press, most notably Eberhart, Howes, and Spender. Other important correspondents include Herbert Cahoon, Marianne Moore, Edith and Osbert Sitwell, and Alice B. Toklas. Also extensive correspondence with Carl Van Vechten (Stein's literary executor), Frances Steloff of the Gotham Book Mart, bookbinder Arno Werner, Ethel Graham of the Stevens-Nelson Paper Corp., Harry Duncan of the Cummington Press, and Donald Gallup of the Yale University Library. Overall, the correspondence offers a detailed picture of the New York City literary scene in the late 1940s.
