In 1832, Scotsman Big John McTavish has lived among the mentis of the Red River valley for thirty years. He also enjoys friendly relations with the neighboring Chippewas, but that may come to an end when he is forced to shoot a Chippewa named Wolf Slayer while defending Pike, a mountain trapper. The trapper's presence in the region is no accident: he has come in search of two men who murdered his partner and are said to have cannibalized the body. His quest for vengeance will bring anguish and destruction far beyond either man's imagining.
