The collection consists of individual and group portraits, candid shots and snapshots of Carruthers, members of his family, and friends and associates; snapshot views of family gatherings and trips; views of official and organizational ceremonies and social gatherings; and publicity shots, snapshots and views of foreign countries and sites in the United States. Views of Carruthers' academic career and his professional activities during the 1940s are limited.
The personal photographs series includes a studio portrait of Carruthers as an infant (1911); as a toddler (ca. 1912); posing with a department store Santa Claus at the Siegel Cooper store in Chicago (late 1910s); in a group portrait with classmates (ca. 1920s); in studio portraits as a young man (1930-1931) and as a college graduate (1933); a studio portrait of his wife, Devonia (ca. early 1930s); scrapbook snapshots of Carruthers, Devonia, and son, Bennie, as well as friends and colleagues, at Howard University, at Fort DuPont and Washington D.C., and in Havana, Cuba (1938); candid shots of Carruthers with colleagues and of Bennie in Havana (1938); a snapshot of Carruthers and his mother when he completed his doctoral program at the University of Illinois (1941); studio portraits of Bennie as a small child through adolescence (ca. late 1930s to 1952); an undated studio portrait of his grandmother, Lucile Williams; a candid shot of Carruthers and Devonia from around the 1970s; and several individual and group snapshots of Carruthers and members of his family, many of whom are not clearly identified, at various family gatherings (1950s to mid 1980s.) Also included are a group of studio and candid portraits of Carruthers, some of which may have been used for publicity purposes (1954 to 1982), and a couple illustrated portraits of Carruthers (n.d.).
The career activities series includes group portraits of Carruthers, with Angel Suárez Rocabruna and others, for a radio braodcast of the Columbia Broadcasting System program "La Cadena de las Américas" (ca. 1940s); in a group portrait, that includes actors Charles Boyer and Dame Judith Anderson, rehearsing for the United Nations Human Rights Concert at the Metropolitan Opera, New York (1950); at a presentation, probably at the United Nations, of a poster with the text of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights (ca. 1950s); group portraits with Belgium's King Baudouin I and Prince Albert at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York (1959 and 1960); and in a candid group portrait, with other magazine editors, at a Travel Writers Association writing and picture competition in Phoenix, Arizona, where he won an award writing for Tuesday Magazine (1970). Also included are views of dinners and award presentations, meetings with officials, and views of tour groups, many of which seem to depict organizational activities for travel agents or travel writers, and may date from the 1950s to the early 1980s.
The travel photographs series is the largest component of the collection, consisting of snapshots, views, and publicity photographs depicting tourist sites in the United States and in different parts of the world. The bulk of snapshot images and a number of views and street scenes were probably taken by Carruthers in his role as travel writer/photographer; other images were provided by local chambers of commerce, convention and tourist bureaus, and government travel boards. Included are views of street scenes, street festivals and Indian dancers in Panama City; historical monuments and landmarks along the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky; snapshot views of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming (1973); landscape and street scenes of Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, as well as portraits of King Juan Carlos I, Queen Sophia and the Spanish Royal Family; snapshots of the urban and tribal inhabitants of Ghana (1973); numerous publicity and snapshot views of Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills of South Dakota; and views of the Incan city of Machu Picchu and the Amazon River city of Iquitos in Peru. Other regions, including California, Europe, South America, parts of Africa, the Caribbean area and Japan are also depicted.
The collection also includes studio and candid portraits of personalities, some of which are inscribed, such as poet Langston Hughes, political figures Averell Harriman and Nelson Rockefeller, attorney Patricia Harris, activist Dorothy Height and opera soprano Lily Pons. Other images include Carruthers and his grandson meeting former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (n.d.); in a group shot with television host Ed Sullivan and others (1956); attending an audience with Pope Paul VI (n.d.) and a snapshot of poet Alain Locke at the 1938 Howard University commencement exercises.
