Abstract:

Papers of General Benjamin Lincoln of Hingham, Mass., 1775-1810, pertaining to his position as Hingham's town clerk; his military career as General in the Continental Army under George Washington during the Revolutionary War and Shays' Rebellion; and positions as Secretary of War (1781-83), lieutenant governor of Massachusetts (1787), United States Commissioner Plenipotentiary to the Southern Indians (1789), and first collector of the port of Boston (1789-1809). The collection includes military, professional, and personal correspondence, maps, orderly books, letterbooks, muster rolls, commissions, and reports of court martial. Correspondence includes original and manuscript copies of letters to and from George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, James Otis, John Jay, John Marshall, Nathaniel Greene, Horatio Gates, Henry Knox, Marquis de Lafayette, Count Kazimierz Pulaski, Timothy Pickering, and Benjamin Waterhouse, among others.

The collection also contains Lincoln family papers, 1635-1964, including deeds for land in Hingham, wills, obligations, receipts, and bills of sale; papers of Lincoln's father Benjamin Lincoln (1699-1771), grandfather Benjamin Lincoln (1671-1767), wife Mary Cushing Lincoln, children, and other descendants; and estate papers for Lincoln's grandparents Samuel and Hannah Gridley Thaxter, father-in-law John Cushing, brother Bela Lincoln, and Lincoln and his wife Mary. The collection also contains two almanacs, 1750 and 1763, with interleaved notes by an anonymous farmer in Hingham, Mass.
