Correspondence, lectures, writings, research notes, bibliographies, scrapbooks, and printed matter relating principally to Schmitt's studies in modern European diplomatic history, especially his work concerning the outbreak of World War I. Documents his years as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University and his association with the American Historical Association, University of Chicago, and the U.S. Department of State. Also includes material pertaining to Schmitt's tenure as editor of the Journal of Modern History and to his interest in contemporary politics.
