Correspondence, speeches and writings, and subject file documenting Austin's naval career at sea as a submarine and destroyer commander before and during World War II, squadron commander during the Korean War, and later as commander of the 2nd Fleet, and his administrative positions as press officer for the Navy Dept. (1937-1940), in various posts in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and as president of the Naval War College, Newport, R.I. Includes material on his duties as a member of Adm. Robert Lee Ghormley's mission to Great Britain as a special naval observer (1940-1941), as director of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations International Affairs Division (1961-1964), and chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board (1964-1967).
