摘要:

The Bert Andrews Collection documents the Black Theater Movement in New York City from the 1950s through the 1980s.

The collection primarily documents productions of the following theater companies: the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop (197?-198?), the Negro Ensemble Company (196?-198?), the New Federal Theater (195?-198?), and miscellaneous theater companies, events and individuals (196?-198?). The collection also includes production stills, rehearsal and candid shots of performers, and candid shots of playwrights and directors, as well as various events including theater parties and award ceremonies. The bulk of the collection, namely contact sheets, was reconstructed by Andrews after a 1985 fire destroyed his entire life's work of prints and negatives. The photographic prints, mostly acquired by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in 1982 (pre-dating the fire), were produced from the original negatives. Some photographs in the collection appear in Andrews' book, "In the Shadow of the Great White Way: Images from the Black Theatre" (1989).

The Photographic Prints series consists primarily of stills documenting theatrical productions, mainly by the Negro Ensemble Company. Among the works represented are "A Soldier's Play," "Ain't Suppose to Die a Natural Death," "The Blacks," "Ceremonies in Dark Old Men," "For Colored Girls who have considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf," "One Mo' Time," and "The River Niger." Also included are candid shots of actors, playwrights, and directors including Ed Bullins, Lonnie Elder III, Loften Mitchell, Sidney Poitier, Melvin Van Peebles, and Lynn Whitfield. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King attending a NEC event are photographed in this series.

The Contact Sheets series documents the productions and some related activities of the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop (197?-198?), the Negro Ensemble Company (196?-198?), the New Federal Theater (195?-198?), and miscellaneous theater companies. Images consist of production stills, rehearsal shots, make up and wardrobe activities, and miscellaneous events including cast parties and award ceremonies. Many contact sheets have accompanying worksheets which identify productions, cast members and other individuals, as well as the production dates, directors, playwrights, and artistic and technical staff. A few contact sheets have missing or incomplete worksheets.

The Frank Silvera Writers Workshop contact sheets also document various symposia, open houses, and tributes sponsored by the Workshop. The New Federal Theater contact sheets include portraits of actors Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee and playwrights Ntozake Shange and Melvin Van Peebles. The miscellaneous theater companies contact sheets include The National Black Touring Circuit production of "Boogie Woogie Landscape;" the Off-Broadway production of "Ceremonies in Dark Old Men;" and an unidentified production of "God's Trombones." Other images include views of the opening night audience attending the Broadway productions of "The River Niger" (1973) and "A Soldier's Play" (1981); and the first year anniversary cast party of "A Soldier's Play."

The Richard Allen Cultural Theater Center is represented in the collection by one production still from "Long Day's Journey into Night" (1981).
