Abstract:

Before they became the most celebrated comedy duo of all time, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were stars in their own right. This program presents five of the funniest silent solo efforts of these great comic actors produced and released in the 1920s, the golden age of classic comedy. See Stan Laurel as a gold rush miner pit against a corrupt sheriff in The Soilers; a bungling professor on a journey bogged down by a piano and a bathtub and chased by bears, ostriches, and elephants in Roughest Africa; and a hysterically ungraceful house guest in Hustling for Health, the last comedy he would make for Hal Roach's Rolin Studios. Finally, see Oliver Hardy in the 1925 film The Paperhanger's Helper and Laurel and Hardy's first film appearance together in A Lucky Dog, which casts Hardy as a crook who robs Laurel at gunpoint.
