I found Maud Hart Lovelace's books when I was around the age of eight and I read each of them numerous times, following the main character Betsy through her own childhood right up to her adult life. I still have my original copies with spendid illustrations and although my own daughters did not get into the series I have kept these copies as "friends from the past". The warmth of the family and the love between best childhood friends is what endeared me to the series.
I understand there is a following still in the author's home town and a book award in honor of her.
