Abstract:

Papers of an author and news broadcaster best known for her autobiographical books "First, You Cry," which concerned her experience with breast cancer, and "Last Wish," which concerned her mother's terminal cancer and suicide. Included are clippings, recorded interviews, photographs, and other biographical materials; scripts, memoranda, proposals, and film clips for news stories broadcast by "NBC Nightly News," "Today," "Women Like Us," and "ABC Nightline"; multiple drafts of her books; and correspondence with editors, agents, readers and viewers, and friends. The extensive files of reader mail contain many personal accounts of experiences with cancer and family suicide.

Prominent correspondents include Joan Didion, Phil Donahue, Erich Fromm, Arthur Herzog III, Mary Tyler Moore, Grant Tinker, and Mortimer B. Zuckerman.
