Abstract:

The interview begins with Burnett's youth in Los Angeles, his musical education, his early experiences with Latin and other jazz bands in the late 50s and early 60s. It continues with his development as a drummer and his experiences as a popular sideman, his establishment of Artworks 4, an important African American cultural venue, then concludes with his return to music after a multiple-year hiatus. Major topics of dicsussion include his influential Jefferson High School music teacher, Sam Browne, the Latin jazz scene in the 50s and 60s, the Black Jazz record label, drummers in the Los Angeles jazz scene, and the elements of musicianship, performance and musical education.
