Abstract:

He was called "the most colorful, most charismatic, most nonconformist, most controversial coach in football." He was Woody Hayes, Ohio State University football coach from 1951-1978, whose Buckeyes won thirteen Big Ten championships, five division 1-A championships and four Rose Bowls, with a cumulative 205-61-10 record. His temper was legendary, and his desire to win at all costs was both his strength and his fatal flaw. Off the field he was far more complex, respected by his colleagues for his commitment to academics, the standards of integrity with which he ran his program, and the genuine enthusiasm he brought to his hobby as an amateur historian. Woody Hayes remains one of the most controversial sports figures in American history. Loved, hated, revered, or despised--but always a winner.
