Résumé:

Khumbu, the homeland of the Sherpa people located at the base of Mt. Everest, is an ancient beyul - one of the sacred hidden valleys of the Himalaya. Sherpa people believe that Padmasambhava, the 8th century Buddhist saint has concealed many valleys for his followers to be discovered at times of great need such as famine, disease and conflicts. It is believed that Sherpa ancestors discovered and settled in Khumbu Beyul over 400 years ago to escape religious persecution in Tibet. This documentary introduces traditional Sherpa views of the land as a spiritually powerful place, co-habited by many other natural and supernatural beings, where negative thoughts and actions such as quarreling, polluting, and taking life are discouraged. It is these positive human attitudes with the sense of self restraint among local residents that make Khumbu not only a peaceful place to live and visit but also a safe refuge for wild animals and plants. This Beyul has now become Sagarmatha National Park and World Heritage Site. This film raises awareness among viewers of the role of the indigenous people's belief system in conserving environment and maintaining harmony between people and other beings. The film also highlights the challenges of preserving the indigenous culture and values in a time of rapid change.
