For artists and naturalists alike, Birds of the Tideline is a valuable resource. The text is detailed and informative, and the pictures are spectacular. There are 200 color photographs showing both summer and winter plumage, courtship postures, and nesting behavior. Seventy-five important species are covered, and Richards discusses identification, characteristics, habitats, and migration patterns. Each entry features both an in-flight silhouette and a range map. As useful as the written material certainly is, the photographs alone are worth the price of the book, and they are stunning. They constitute an essential reference for anyone engaged in the study of these fascinating birds; as an artist’s reference, it is sensational.
