Summary:
In America the leading cause of death among black males ages 15 to 24 is murder by other blacks. The cause of this phenomenon has been seen as the struggle for self-esteem and dominance aggravated by social discrimination, poverty and drug abuse. The question is asked: "Can't blacks assume more responsibility for changing this situation and not continue attributing it primarily to racism in white American society?"  Read more...

Abstract:

In America the leading cause of death among black males ages 15 to 24 is murder by other blacks. The cause of this phenomenon has been seen as the struggle for self-esteem and dominance aggravated by social discrimination, poverty and drug abuse. The question is asked: "Can't blacks assume more responsibility for changing this situation and not continue attributing it primarily to racism in white American society?" Two prominent blacks in this film, Les Payne, a journalist and editor for Newsday, and Glenn C. Loury, a political economist, respond to this question with somewhat divergent views. Also included are interviews with black teenagers, comments by Alvin Poussaint, black author of "Why Blacks kill Blacks", and a visit to a Boston high school where an unusual anti-homicide program is taught by Dr. Deborah Stith.
