Correspondence, journals, orders, inventories, bills, receipts, and printed matter relating primarily to Dulany's tour of duty as commander of the U.S. Navy Pacific Squadron from 1852 to 1855. Downing and Thomas Smith, lieutenant in the British Army at Gibraltar in 1820; dispute between Peru and Spain arising from Peru's territorial claims to the Chincha Islands; harassment of American traders, merchants, and seamen by Chilean, Peruvian, and Mexican government officials; a proposal that the United States annex the Hawaiian Islands; and the search for Scottish-born Australian pioneer and entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.
