Abstract:

A true maverick and Marlborough legend, Peter Yealands consistently turns up at the forefront of his chosen pursuits, which have included aquaculture, forestry and more recently the wine industry. Yealands received the first marine farming license in New Zealand and he and his family were pioneers in this country's mussel farming industry. On his bloved bulldozers Yealands is a sculptor of the earth, and his forestry, park and wetlands creations have become award-winning templates of beauty and sustainability. Yealands Estate, New Zealand's largest privately owned vineyard, is where he has built the world's most ecologically advanced winery. Devoted to the concept of 100 per cent sustainability, Yealands is now a major exporter to over thirty-five countries. Many aspects of his business career represent archetypal 'David and Goliath' scenarios. A prime example is the 2005 Oyster Bay takeover story - a full-blown battle between Peter Yealands and the Delegat's Group vying for control of the publicly traded Oyster Bay Vineyard - a highly successful brand but a puzzlingly unprofitable compay. Throughout all the adventures of his life - including wild rides in concrete yachts and on the 80s share market - Peter Yealands remains a paragon of Kiwi ingenuity, renowned for a consistent indifference to critics and an unwavering commitment to hard work. An internationally regarded proponent of practical sustainability, Peter Yealands knows that anything is possible if you "think boldly, tread lightly and never say it can't be done."
