Abstract:

Part of a series for the middle school science curriculum, correlated to the National Science Education Standards. This segment covers two topics in the life science and health curriculum, blood typing and bones. In the unit on blood typing, host David Heil donates some blood and finds out how his donation is used. Explains plasma, antigen, and why knowing the donor's and recipient's blood type is vitally important to do a transfusion. In the unit on bones, host Eileen Galindo and expert Kathy Bryant cut a giant bone in half to discover the structure and substances that make up human bones. Explains the three types of bones in the human body, the two basic types of cells that make up bones, and how to keep bones healthy. Also includes a segment featuring Fatimah Jackson, biological anthropologist who studies the relationship between plants and medicine.
