The Society's file, in addition to the almost complete collections of works by renowned designers Edwin D. French, Arthur N. Macdonald, Sidney L. Smith, and J. Winfred Spenceley, includes many pre-1850 American bookplates by such engravers as Henry Dawkins and the Mavericks as well as more modern plates, such as woodcuts by Julius J. Lankes from the 1920s. Basic bookplate types and styles are well-represented: armorial, allegorical, whimsical, library interior, portrait, and simple name labels. Of particular interest are a group of bookplates engraved for New Yorkers, ca. 1790, and Bella C. Landauer's correspondence with artists and fellow collectors.
