Dystopian futures.... but with diverse love interests   (2012-07-09)
It was refreshing to see several stories in this collection that had diverse romantic interests...we have straight, gay and lesbian couples in different stories. One could argue that the last story is love between cyborgs and aliens (?) but I'll be honest and say I didn't get the last story in the collection (The Empty Pocket by Cadin).
I usually don't enjoy short stories as much as I enjoy novels, but many of these stories had cool ideas and were well-written enough to keep my interest. My favorite stories from the collection were Eric and Pan by Sleator, Beserker Eyes by Snyder, Seekers in the City by DuPrau and Foundlings by Peterfreund. The others didn't resonate with me as much and some felt unfinished or too rushed.
Many types of end-of-the-world scenarios are presented in this collection, ranging from global warming disaster, ecological nightmares, zombie apocalypse, deep bunker-living gone wrong and totalitarian governments.
My verdict: if you enjoy a little nightmare in your futures, you may like some of the stories here.
