Breaking the Magic Spell is a collection of essays examining the folk and fairy tale. Zipes argues that these stories must be read in the political and economic contexts of the times when they were told or written down. The transition from folk to fairy tales in the 16th-18th centuries marks the time when the stories were first written down from oral traditions and moralized to serve the needs of the upper classes. Overall, this was an excellent and thought-provoking book that adds much to the discussion of fairy tales. Zipes ends by reflecting on modern fantasy authors (like Rowling, Pullman, Steig, etc.) and how valuable they are (or aren't) as critical, society-changing storytellers.
