Set in rural Virginia - near Washington, DC anyway - the themes of Bridge to Terabithia are belonging and death.

Jess doesn't belong in his family, or in school. When a new girl moves to his rural neighborhood, she accepts Jess as her friend, and he is surprised to accept her as his friend as well. Leslie is open to the new environment she has entered, and with her, Jess finds himself becoming more open as well. He finally has a friend and a feeling of belonging to something. By the end of the book, despite tragedy, Jess is able to continue with the new attitude of confidence and belonging that grew within him as he knew Leslie, and to offer what he has learned to those about him.
