Die renommierte Kaufmannsfamilie Buddenbrook hat ihr ganzes Denken und Handeln den Erfordernissen ihrer Firma untergeordnet. Dabei bleibt alles auf der Strecke, was nach selbstbestimmtem Leben ausschen könnte, nach Liebe und nach Kunst - der Verzicht auf das eigene Glück erscheint gerdezu als Vorbedingung für den Geschäftserfolg. Die Menschen scheitern existenziell - die Firma geht unter.
