Abstract:

The theological principle undergirding this thesis is that the church is the building of God, established upon the foundation of Jesus Christ, the cornerstone. Gathered as living stones in the fellowship of the church and gifted for service, the community of God's stewards participates in Christ's redemptive work, becoming the provisional manifestation of what God intends for the world. The implicit ministry challenge is twofold. Unsurfaced congregational norms have kept the structure of the church dependent upon the pastor and unable to make full use of layleaders' skills, talents, and energies. An outdated solicitation of members' time and talent in the stewardship campaign has left church committees understaffed and it has failed to deploy more of the congregation into volunteer opportunities in the community. To address these challenges, the pastor will attempt to renegotiate his role with church committee chairpersons, engage the Session in thinking systemically about the life of the congregation, and engage the Budget and Stewardship committee in the redesign of the time and talent process.
