Abstract:
The Office of Research has expanded the scope of its efforts to include not only library, information, and computer science-related topics, but also business-oriented research. The author reports on the objectives of the completed and active projects in this area. Distinct from research related to the core processes of OCLC's customer base (library and information science research) and OCLC's core competencies (the application of technology to the business processes of the customer base, to wit, computer science), business-oriented research investigates topics aligned with basic business activities such as marketing, finance, and providing customer services. This article describes the active and completed projects in the following categories: management trends, market-related information gathering, business planning, and business process assessment.
