The Holy Bible in English, including the O.T. Apocrypha.
The second edition of the version revised by Coverdale from Matthew's Bible. The project was instigated by Thomas Cromwell, hence the Bible is sometimes called the "Cromwell's Bible". The prologue by Archibishop Cranmer in this edition has led to its also being called "Cranmer's Bible", but it is usually termed the "Great Bible" due to Cromwell's decree that it should be a "Bible of the largest and greatest volume."
Text divided into five parts, each with separate foliation and title page in red and black.
General title page and title page to the New Testament within woodcut border, attributed to H. Holbein the Younger, showing Henry VIII, Cranmer, and Cromwell distributing Bibles. The other title pages within woodcut border with scenes from the O.T.
ABS copy: bound in brown morocco. Buff end papers. Gold edges. Title, printer's name, and date in gold on spine.
Text printed in double columns, paragraph form, with 62 lines to a full column. Title centered at top of page with running heads at side through 1 Ezra only. Folio no. in outer corner. Chapter summaries in smaller type. Woodcut initials indented over 14 lines at the beginning of books and over 4 lines at the beginning of chapters. A few very large initials. Woodcuts throughout the text. Some loose pages.
Includes: "Kalendar"; "Almanacke ..." for 1540-1557; "A Descripcyon ... "; "A prologue or preface made by ... Thomas Archbyshop of Canterbury ... "; "The names of all the bookes of the Byble" (first group of pages); Pentateuch (second group of pages); Joshua-Job (third group); Psalms-Malachi (fourth group); 3 Ezra-2 Maccabees (fifth group); New Testament; "A Table to fynde ..." (sixth group of pages).
