The Holy Bible in English, including the O.T. Apocrypha.
A reprint of 'Matthew's Bible' of 1537, with notes, edited by Edmund Becke. Probably translated by John Rogers, and based on Tyndale's version.
Tyndale'a prologue to Jonah is here reprinted for the first time.
Often called the "Bug Bible" (Psalms XCI, 5) or "Wife-beater Bible", for the well-known note at end of 1 Peter verse 3.
Two copies in ABS library: both with original brown leather binding over cardboards. Blind stamped covers. One copy with white end papers and brown edges, another copy with marbled end papers, red edges, and without title page, Almanach, and Kalender. Title in gold on red leather label on spine. Place, printers' names, and date in gold on spine.
Title page in red and black, within illustrated border. The N.T. has special title page, in black only. Joshua-Job, Psalms-Malachi, and the Apocrypha have special half-titles with contents.
Text printed in double column, paragraph form, 65 lines to the full column. Title centered at top of page above left column, chapter no. above the right column. Brief running heads at top left corner. Folio no. at upper right corner of right-hand page. Chapter summaries in smaller type. References in margins and notes at end of books or chapters. Woodcut initials indented over 10 lines at the beginning of books and over 5 lines at the beginning of chapters. Woodcuts throughout the text.
