A record of the expedition (1820) of Lewis Cass to the headwaters of the Mississippi River kept by Trowbridge, the expedition's assistant topographer. Included are descriptions of the south shore of Lake Superior, Michilimackinac, the Falls of St. Anthony, Fort Snelling, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. There is also information on wild rice harvesting, Indian canoes, Henry R. Schoolcraft, Lake Superior copper mines, the American Fur Company, and Jonathan Carver's grave.
