Abstract:

This piece was published during the height of the California Gold Rush and the Golden Age of frontier exploration. As word spread about the potential rumoured west of the Mississippi, more and more people became interested in their possible destinations and the routes which they would take to get there. In the following pages, close, personal detail is attended to encounters with Natives, trappers, various forts and outposts, prairie land, deserts, foothills, mountains, animals and established permanent settlements of the West.
