Abstract:

Cook continues his relentless pursuit of a great southern continent, putting fable and mystery to rest. Despite his great skills sailing and navigating across the world to Tahiti, charting New Zealand and then up the east coast of Australia, Cook has met nothing like the Great Barrier Reef. Endeavour runs aground and is nearly lost. A desperate James Cook limps his ship to a river near modern day Cooktown where they make emergency repairs. While marooned Cook sees and eats his first kangaroo and makes contact with the local Aborigines. As a patched-up Endeavour crawls its way north again, Cook commits the most controversial act of the voyage: he claims the entire east coast of New Holland for Britain, without permission from the local inhabitants. To this day, Cook's claim is still not accepted by Australia's Aboriginal people. Cook makes for the port of Batavia, seeking essential repairs for Endeavour to sail home. But rather than being a saving grace, Batavia's infected water turns Endeavour into a death ship. Until now Cook has not lost a man, but by the Cape of Good Hope, Cook has lost over a third of his crew. Back in London, enduring trials of life are also taking their toll on the Cook family. In his absence, Cook's wife Elizabeth must bury a second child. On his return to London, Joseph Banks is feted by London society and the newspapers and he is offered two ships for a second voyage south. Cook's maps confirm his brilliance and he is promoted to Commander to lead Banks' expedition. However the indulgent Banks demands impractical changes to the ship and when refused, he abandons the journey. Cook commands Resolution and a partner ship Adventure. For three years, Cook relentlessly probes the waters of three oceans, proving beyond doubt that there was no great southern land of milk and honey. Cook also charts the vast Pacific Ocean-adding to the map of the world by a third. It makes him one of the great British heroes, but the massive responsibility is taking its toll on James Cook, the man. He is losing control; only his obsession with discovery continues to drive him. Executive Producer: Mark Hamlyn, Stephen Amezdroz, Pat Ferns, John Barnett Producer: Tony Wright ( Producer), Andrew Ferns (Producer) Canada), Paul Rudd (Series Producer) Director: Wain Fimeri, Paul Rudd, Matthew Thomason Writer: Wain Fimeri, Paul Rudd, Matthew Thomason DOP/Cinematographer: Pieter Stathis Featured People: Vanessa Collingridge Principal Cast: Matt Young, Bridget Bezanson.
