Included are notebooks, manuscript and typescript drafts, and some galleys and page proofs, with holograph corrections of novels CABEZA DE LA HIDRA, CAMBIO DE PIEL, CAMPAÑA, CONSTANCIA Y OTRAS NOVELAS PARA VI̋RGENES, CRISTŐBAL NONATO, FAMILIA LEJANA, GRINGO VIEJO, MUERTE DE ARTEMIO CRUZ (partial mss.), NARANJO, O LOS CI̋RCULOS DEL TIEMPO, REGIŐN MA̋S TRANSPARENTE, and TERRA NOSTRA; and drafts of short stories collected under the title AGUA QUEMADA, DI̋AS ENMASCARADOS, CANTAR DE CIEGOS, CHAC MOOL Y OTROS CUENTOS, and CUERPOS Y OFRENDAS. There are typescript drafts and some galleys and page proofs for English translations by Margaret Sayers Peden, Alfred J. Mac Adam, Lysander Kemp, and Thomas Christensen of titles listed above, and of the the novels AURA, DIANA, THE GODDESS WHO HUNTS ALONE, THE YEARS WITH LAURA DIAZ, and INEZ, as well as of the short stories collected under the title BURNT WATER. There is related correspondence with these translators and with French and German translators Céline Zins and Maria Bamberg.

The Papers also include typescript drafts of Fuentes' plays, TODOS LOS GATOS SON PARDOS, TUERTO ES REY, ORQUI̋DEAS A LA LUZ DE LA LUNA (Spanish and English versions), and CEREMONIAS DEL ALBA; and manuscript and typescript drafts of Fuentes' film and television scripts, including MEXICO, MEXICO and BURIED MIRROR/ESPEJO ENTERRADO, and screenplays written by others for films based on Fuentes' novels, such as OLD GRINGO, and for other films.

Correspondents (1944-1994) include a wide range of writers, artists, filmmakers and politicians. There are letters received and letters sent by Fuentes to Latin American writers, including Alfonso Reyes, Miguel Angel Asturias, and Juan Carlos Onetti, and writers of the "Boom" in Latin American fiction, such as Guillermo Cabrera Infante, José Donoso, Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, and Mario Vargas Llosa. Some of the Mexican writers represented in the collection are Octavio Paz, José Emilio Pacheco, Elena Garro, Elena Poniatowska, Fernando Benítez, Ramón Xirau, María Luisa Mendoza, and Carlos Monsiváis. There is also extensive correspondence with international writers Harold Pinter, Milan Kundera, Vasiles Vasilikos, Italo Calvino, Régis Debray, Philip Roth, Norman Mailer, and William Styron, and with filmmakers and film producers, such as Luis Buñuel, Joseph Losey, Manuel Barbachano Ponce, and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. The collection also includes correspondence with literary agents and publishers that documents the financial and public success of Fuentes' career: Brandt & Brandt, Carmen Balcells/Agencia Literaria, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Fondo de Cultura Económica, and Editorials Joaquín Mortiz and Seix Barral.

Juvenilia includes early fiction and nonfiction, poetry, cartoons, drawings, and several notebooks. Nonfiction includes manuscript and typescript drafts of essays, articles, and introductions which have appeared in books, newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., Latin America, and Europe; and typescript drafts and some galleys and page proofs of books LA REVOLUION DE MAYO, NUEVA NOVELA HISPANOAMERICANA, CASA CON DOS PUERTAS, TIEMPO MEXICANO, CERVANTES O LA CRITICA DE LA LECTURA, and English version DON QUIXOTE, OR THE CRITIQUE OF READING, MYSELF WITH OTHERS, VALIENTE MUNDO NUEVO, BURIED MIRROR, and Spanish version ESPEJO ENTERRADO, and GEOGRAFI̋A DE LA NOVELA. In addition, the nonfiction series includes a small amount of material related to Fuentes' co-founding and editing (with E. Carballo) of the magazine REVISTA MEXICANA DE LITERATURA in 1956-1957; and manuscript and typescript drafts of speeches and interviews made by Fuentes in the U.S., Latin American, and Europe during the period 1954-1994.

The Papers of Others series includes manuscripts by a variety of Latin American and American writers, including a one-act play by Octavio Paz and short stories by Juan Rulfo and Julio Cortázar; several dissertations and manuscripts of articles on Fuentes; and typescript draft and page proofs by Cintio Vitier, ANTOLOGI̋A DE LA POESI̋A HISPANOAMERICAN CONTEMPORA̋NEA (1925-1955), edited by Cintio Vitier. There are also 26 scrapbooks compiled by the author and printed articles by and about the author in many languages. In addition, there are a small amount of photographs of Fuentes and a few sound cassettes of the author reading his play ORCHIDS IN THE MOONLIGHT, ca. 1982.
