Abstract:

Miller dazzled her fans with her first two novels about the Chalmers sisters, separated as children on the Western frontier. Now she introduces Caroline Chalmers, a once-proper schoolmistress in a small Wyoming town. Caroline's relationship with the dashing Guthrie Hayes is shocking from the start. Holding her lovely head high, she marches right into the local saloon to enlist Hayes, a former Confederate soldier infamous for his wartime raids on Yankee prisons, in her plan to rescue her jailed fiance from the hangman's noose. But even as Caroline professes her love for her fiance, she is unable to resist Hayes' passionate kisses. Too late, Caroline realizes how perilous her request really is, for this man whose caress fulfills her secret desires will be forced to risk his life for her!
