The majority of images in the Society's file date from the 1860s when the carte de visite photograph became the chief commercial portrait medium, showing only the sitter's head and shoulders. Many depict soldiers and officers in Civil War uniform. Later cards feature full-length figures posed in studio settings. Of special interest are composite caricatures by Charles D. Fredericks in which a photographic head is combined with a cartoon body. Scenes of New York and other locations, Civil War views (including ca. 50 from Mathew Brady's Album Gallery), natural history prints in color, copies of miscellaneous paintings and other objects complete the file. Researchers seeking photographs of prominent persons or Union soldiers should consult this file; also those interested in costume history or the history of photography will find material of interest.
