Abstract:

In a luxurious fifth avenue mansion in April 1906, New York debutante Mallory Bookever and her widowed aunt entertain an unexpected caller, Scott Suydam of San Francisco, who has brought personal letters for them from Mallory's fiancé. Suydam seems straightforward, but Mallory detects a note of evasion in his voice, a kind of too well-controlled steadiness, as if to conceal some remote uneasiness - although the facts are really simple: Richard Welbeck, whom Mallory is soon to marry, has had an accident that prevents his crossing the continent for their wedding. Consequently, he has sent his best friend to escort her to California, where the ceremony will be suitaly performed.
