I was so privileged to hear the author speak at a fundraiser dinner for ECFA, May, 2009 where they gave out copies of his book. It is a touching story and well put-together. The loneliness and despair of this young child as he grows up is compelling and pulled me through the book in one sitting, on one of my days off when I could afford to sit for awhile and get lost in a book. It appears that Mitchell is saying that everyone has a chance in life, no matter how difficult their circumstances – that everyone has a chance of being rescued, by God, if not literally by a human being. But I don’t know how that plays out in every person’s story, considering how many boys were left behind in the orphanage. I believe that what some might consider “small infractions” against a child may not be a big deal, but played out over and over and over again takes a toll in that child’s life. Some things do affect a person for life. Mitchell told how God came to him, and how he responded. He eventually learned that God wanted him to forgive the people who had harmed him, specifically his mother, his father and his grandmother on his father’s side. Mitchell realized he didn’t have any place he could call home and go back to as a young adult man and it grieved him. Eventually, he saw that God wanted him to consider Him to be his father and come home to Him.
I was impressed how he learned as a high-school boy that he needed to be very still to hear the voice of God. For a young male, holding still is not normal!
Some lessons had to be learned over and over. Other lessons were learned once but only through struggles that continued over time until he found an answer or finally surrendered. We are left in the end with the knowledge of hope in a Savior, hope in a Person, and hope in One Who has been in our lives all along.
