Abstract:

(Critical) This program, part of a series from the American Journal of Nursing Company, discusses care of the neurologically disabled patient during the acute stage. The disabilities of two patients, one a 58 year old stroke, and one a 23year old male with spinal cord injury, are contrasted in somewhat stilted dramatizations. The causes, pathophysiology, nature, and prognosis of neurological disabilities are discussed, and the reflex arc, pyramidal system, sensory pathways, and the lobes of the brain are explained. The program is clear, concise, and stimulates discussion, but it should be used under the auspices of a knowledgable instructor, and it is suggested the series is presented as a unit. The module isrecommended for limited use for nurse practitioners in rehabilitation, neurology, neurosurgery, and general medical/surgical nursing.
