Volume 4 incorrectly designated as volume 4, part 2; volume 6, part 2 also called volume 7. This is a translation of volumes 1-7 of the original 9 volumes in French; volumes 1-3 translated by John Lockman. Title pages in red and black. Title vignettes, head- and tail-pieces, historiated initials. Woodcut ornaments and press figures present. Engraved ornaments signed: Gravelot and G. Scotin. 221 engravings, some folded, mainly signed: 'B. Picart delin. C. Du Bosc fe.' but including 'Seb. le Clerc delin.' 'Petrus Lucatellus del.' (vol. 1); 'P. Tanjé sculp', 'L. F. du Bourg del. B. Bernaerts sculp.' (vol. 6); 'I. Folkema sculp.', F.M. La Cave sculp.', 'Cl. Duflos fecit' (vol. 7). Largely on same paper as text except in vols. 5-7 where some are watermarked: Grapes/I O (Tower with letter T) DV [PVY] M (like Heawood 3303 ff); Grapes/ C i P (2 hearts) GOVRBEYRE (see Heawood 3339-40). Watermarks in text include: Strasburg bend and lily/I S in bow and arrow (like Heawood 89A) Strasburg bend and lily/WOH; Strasburg bend and lily/GVH; IV/-. All volumes have an indistinguishable watermark on the flyleaves. Volume 7, pages 157-162 contains additions and corrections to the former volumes. |
