Binding: Full vellum with gold-tooled border and bird in center of front and back covers. Origin: Possibly a manuscript copy of a printed book; written in England. Phillipps dates to 17th century; this manuscript is dated to ca. 1630 but may have been written after 1633 based on the poem by Herbert: cf. The works of George Herbert, edited with a commentary by F.E. Hutchinson, Oxford, 1941, p. lvi: "Several of The Temple poems [including "Lent"] are found in commonplace books of the seventeenth century, but in no case have I seen any reason to suppose that they were not transcribed from one or other of the printed editions [first published in 1633]." Dedication signed "T. S."; inscription on inside of front cover: "Query, whether the T.S. was Thomas Sternhold about A.D. 1549 or Thomas Salmon; the former was groom of the robes to Henry VIII. + to Edward VI."
