Abstract:

It explores racism in Israel, anti-Semitism in Britain, deep-rooted hatred, and the struggle of four families dealing with the prospect of letting their beloved children sacrifice everything they know, for everything they want. Told in the third person, the story moves between Then and Now. Now, Daniel's and Udi's voices are most prominent but we slip also into the perspectives of their family members: Daniel's fiercely protective, liberal sister who will not blind herself to Israel's flaws and is marrying a non-Jew; Udi's sister, a feminist writer; and his Iraqi mother, who reads coffee cups. Interspersed with this is Then, the reverberating story of Dara and Kaseem.
