Abstract:

This program provides the necessary background for a thorough understanding of keys-the tonal arrangement of musical pitches toward a tonic note. The relationship between pitches is examined by rearranging the notes of a tune into a pitch series, or scale. The reasons why composers use a variety of keys in their works-to avoid monopitch that does not correspond with high-low variations in voices and instruments, and to allow for musical modulation-are discussed. All of the theories are then illustrated in extracts from Schubert's Du bist die Ruh and Octet.
