Bret Fetzer; Thomas Middleton; William Rowley
|Notes:||Based in part on The changeling, by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley.
"The Changeling was originally a collaboration between Thomas Middleton and William Rowley in 1622. Scholars generally hold Rowley responsible for a comic subplot between two servants going into a madhouse in order to woo the doctor's wife, and for contributions to the original's opening and closing scenes. The subplot I have removed entirely, having always found it labored and a distraction from the main story (though there is allusion to it, and the name of Isabella comes from it, though the nature of her character does not). What remains of Rowley's contributions to the first (actually, in this version, the second) and last scenes I do not know, but both have been considerably altered, and though scattered lines by Rowley may remain, I have decided to remove his name from the authorship."--P.3.
