Abstract:

Producer/director Joseph Papp is interviewed by Channel 2 news correspondent Dave Marash on the set of the play The death of Von Richthofen as witnessed from earth at the Public Theater in New York. Segment begins at 23:00 and ends at 30:00. Papp discusses his conflicts about performing at the White House for President Reagan who wants to cut funding for the arts; his meetings prior to the performance regarding the budget cutbacks with high ranking members of Reagan's staff, including James Baker; meeting the president and Nancy Reagan; his ideas on the decentralization of arts funding; past presidental support of the arts; staffing his productions with "favorites" and the importance of cultivating talented people; upcoming offerings at the New York Shakespeare Festival; his experience as a stage manager at WCBS and views on the current state of television news.

Part seven of the BBC-TV serialized television drama, War and peace, based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy. Program begins at 55:00 and ends at 147:00.
