Papp discusses the purpose of theater; the qualities that make a good producer; his motivation to produce free Shakespeare plays in Central Park; the quality of theater in the United States and relationship to its measure of philanthropic support; stage acting in comparison with acting for film; the dramatic skills of actors George C. Scott and Meryl Streep; the casting of Linda Ronstadt in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance; the various existing forms of support for theater; the federal government's lack of interest in supporting the theater; the quality of the theatrical work currently being produced in the U.S.; this country's work in comparison with that of other countries and with its own shows from the 1960s and 70s; and his production of works by British, Czech and Russian playwrights.
