Abstract:

In May 1958, fearing that the newly formed French government would give in to Arab nationalists in Algeria, General Raoul Salan, commander of the French forces in the 10th military district of Algeria, seized control of the country and demanded that Charles de Gaulle be restored to power. Public outrage over the execution of three French prisoners by Arab nationalists also contributed to de Gaulle's return. De Gaulle defused the crisis, eventually calling for the Algerian self-determination - a move that generated significant controversy.
