Abstract:

Correspondence; military orders, circulars, certificates, and oversize commissions; petitions; reports; and historical narratives relating primarily to the military career of Charles Powell Adams (a.k.a. C. Powell Adams) during the Civil War (April 1861-May 1864) as commander of Company H, First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and while on frontier duty (July 1864-May 1866) at Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory, where he was in command of the fort and Hatch's Independent Battalion of Cavalry during the period of Indian unrest following the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

The papers include information on Adams' rise through the military ranks; the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, including its actions at the Battle of Gettysburg and a claim (1903) by Adams' son that his father, not William Colvill, had led the regiment's charge at the battle; Hatch's Independent Battalion of Cavalry; progress of the Civil War and developments in the so-called Indian Wars in Minnesota and Dakota Territory; and conditions on the frontier in western Minnesota and Dakota Territory, among the Ojibwe (Chippewa) Indians, and among the Dakota (Sioux) refugees in Canada; and the history and Adams' administration of Fort Abercrombie. Correspondents include Henry Hastings Sibley, Minnesota Governor Stephen Miller, and Ignatius Donnelly.

Civil War narratives by Adams describe the organization of the First Minnesota, the regiment's journey from Fort Ripley to Bull Run, and the battle of Antietam; they are accompanied by a list of the names and dates (July 1861-July 1863) of battles in which the First Minnesota played a prominent role. Also present are photocopies, compiled by the cataloger, of biographical sketches and an obituary delineating both the military and non-military aspects of Adams' life and career.
