Abstract:

Papers of politician Charles S. Benton, mostly covering his career in New York, with emphasis on the split and reunion in the Democratic Party in 1848 and 1849.

Among them are his declaration of principles (1842); two letters on state constitutional reforms for New York (1843); and letters from anti-slavery democrats known as "Barnburners" including David Dudley Field, Timothy Jenkins, and one letter from David Wilmot (1848). Also included is a draft of a letter to Henry Dodge of Wisconsin that he had nominated Dodge for vice president at the 1848 Utica convention; letters to Benton as chairman of the left-wing group of the Democrats preceding the union convention at Syracuse in 1849, including correspondents B.F. Butler, John A. Dix, Azariah C. Flagg, Simeon B. Jewett, C.A. Mann, and Preston King; a letter from W.V. Barr of New York demands consideration for working classes in the Democratic platform (1850); and another group of letters deals with party strife during the election of 1853.

Benton seems to have had an early acquaintance with Josiah A. Noonan, both being newspaper editors in the Mohawk Valley. The first letter in this collection from Noonan is dated at Mineral Point in 1840, and after Benton's removal to La Crosse in 1856 there are several more, discussing state politics, railroad affairs, and personal matters. There are several letters from C.F. Huntsman of Milwaukee containing information on Democratic Party affairs in Wisconsin, finances, and local gossip. Two letters from Eau Claire deal with the land office there. There are also a number of letters from old friends and associates in New York, including John Van Buren, reporting on events there and inquiring about prospects in land speculation in Wisconsin.
