The concept of the “cheese stands alone” in the original story of “The Farmer in the Dell” is challenged in this book when the rat decides that the cheese looks lonely down there in the meadow and should not have to “stand alone.” He is joined by a cat, and then a dog, then the girl, and eventually the girl’s mom and dad, the farmer! Because they are all so hungry, they decide that the song is silly that the cheese should “stand alone” when the sheer site of the beautiful golden hunk of cheese down there in the middle of the meadow is torturing them so. What will become of the cheese with everyone drooling? I can tell you this – the rat is left alone staring at the beautiful cheese while the rest go off to fetch tasty items to go with the cheese to make a truly grand party. Is this a good idea to leave the rat alone with the cheese?
