Abstract:

Biographical material, correspondence, letters, scrapbooks, photographs, artwork, project files, business files, writings, printed materials, and address books document the career and life of sculptor Chester Beach.

Biographical material includes curriculum vitaes and artist's statements. Correspondence is with Frederick Law Olmsted and family members. Letters and greeting cards are from Maxfield Parrish, Austin Purves, Daniel Chester French, Frederick W. MacMonnies, Jessica B. Peixotto, Hazel Brill Jackson and Charles C. Curran, among others.

Two scrapbooks contain letters of commendation, a telegram, photographs, membership certificates, awards, exhibition catalogs and clippings. Photographs (including glass plate negatives) are of finished and in-process works of art, plasters, sitters and subjects, Beach, his family, studios, Beach's childhood home, and a photograph of attendees at dinner for artist Edmund Greacen at the Salmagundi Club, New York, 1922.

Artwork includes a sketchbook, loose sketches, lithographs, etchings and etching plate. Project files are on sculpture and medal commissions and include correspondence, sketches, plans, invoices, research material, photographs, and clippings. Business files include sales records and price lists as well as posthumous records of sales and exhibitions.
