Abstract:

A trilogy about a gay man whose sexuality is at odds with his Roman Catholic upbringing and faith. Children delves into his childhood, which was punctuated by both domestic and social violence, in that his father was both sick and violent, that he was being bullied at school, and the effect all that had on him in adulthood, ending with the death of his father; Madonna and child shows him in middle age, a conscientious worker who is devoted to his mother, and how his sexuality and faith, as well as his public and private lives, are at odds with one another; Death and transfiguration is a summary of his life, with flashbacks to his childhood and young manhood, culminating in his acceptance of his mortality as he lies dying in a hospital.
